Meet our Green Lawnmowers

Here at Silva Star Farm we try to keep things as green as we can, thus keeping the property sustainable. Instead of using lawnmowers in front of our chicken tractors we use lambs. This past year we added three Barbados Blackbelly lambs to the farm, two have been raised on grass specifically to be used for meat and one we will keep as our breeding ewe. As usual we do not name our food, but we have named our ewe and her name is Percy. World meet Percy the Barbados Blackbellied lamb. We have chosen this breed of sheep due to their reputation of being extremelly hardy and they are a hair sheep so no wool. No wool means less parasites and easy keeping in a pasture living environment.

Pasture Raised Lamb

We will be harvesting our pasture raised lambs in late Spring. We will be selling the lambs whole only. Please email us today if you'd like to put a deposit down to hold a lamb. Deposits to hold the lamb are $50 and are non-refundable. Price pre pound for our pasture fed lamb is $2.99 per pound hanging weight.

How this works:
When we are ready to harvest our lambs, we will notify you, and confirm your purchase at that time.

Lamb Cost: $2.99/lb hanging (gross) weight
Harvester Fee: $50
Butcher Fee: 99 cents/lb (we use willowside meats in Santa Rosa, CA)

You can expect a whole lamb to weight no more than 120 lbs gross. Our last batch of lamb weighed in at 66 lbs each, since we're using a leaner type lamb they weigh out smaller than conventional lambs.

Example of the price of a 66lb lamb:

Gross Weight: 66 lbss
Price Per Pound: $2.99
Cost of Lamb: $197.33 (you would pay the farm this amount)
Harvester Fee: $30
Butcher Fee: $70 (minimum charge is $70 if lamb under 70 lbs)
Amount due to butcher upon pick up of lamb: $100

Total cost for lamb = $197+$100=$297
Take Home Weight = 45 lbs

The Lamb Cost and Harvester Fee are payable to Silva Star Farm; Butcher Fee is payable to your choice of butcher when you pick up your lamb. We use Willowside meats in Santa Rosa, CA but we will have your lamb sent to the butcher of your choice if you have a preference.

Your total will depend on the precise weight of your half, which will vary a bit. Note that hanging weight (gross) includes organs and other parts that are not included in the meat you pick up. The harvester fee is per lamb to one half lamb would be $25.

Lamb Purchase Process:
1) The lambs are picked up and harvested by a professional harvester at the farm.
2) The harvester weights the lamb on site and takes the carcass back to the butcher. As of now we have arranged to have Willowside Meats in Santa Rosa do our butchering.
3) Once I have the weight of the lamb I contact you with the gross weight and total lamb price. The price per pound for the lamb is $2.99/lb.
4) Upon receipt of the payment for the lamb I will notify Willowside meats with all of your information and at which point you will be able to call in and arrange any special butcher requirements that you wish. If you are curious about what they will do, you may call them and they'd love to talk to you at (707) 546-8404.
5) Willowside will call you when your lamb is ready to be picked up and you will go to Willowside pay for the harvester, cut and wrapping along with any extra special things you plan to order. (for example with pigs I have some meats smoked and some special sausages made, you may want ground lamb meat). Cut and wrap charge $70 plus $30 for harvester = $100 for whole lamb. (this is all estimated other charges may apply depending on what you chose to do with your lamb) You pay the butcher this when you pick your lamb up.
