Silva Star Farm's Pasture Raised "Stellar J Pork" small logo

Happy Pigs, Healthy People

Sarah Silva (farmer) and her family have been raising pigs since she can remember. As a child Sarah remembers going out to the then deamed "pig pen" to watch the pigs roll in the mud and frolick in the sun each summer day. Although Sarah's father raised pigs in a much more conventional way, in a small area with limited pasture, the quality and texture of the pork was amazing compared to the "stuff you get in the stores." There was love behind that farmer. Today at Silva Star Farm, we're tring to one up the past generation, not with love, but with space, Sarah does her best to ensure that her pigs get to live like pigs. From the time they come to Silva Star Farm the pigs are rotated on both pasture and under the various trees that make up Silva Star Farm. The pigs are given as much rooting area and grazing area that they need. In addition to pasture, every day Sarah delivers fresh produce from the nearby produce market, Bill's Farm Basket, to her piggy friends. We also make custom organic chicken and fish meal for the pigs. Along with their fresh food, our pigs have access to pasture and organic feed 24 hours a day. Silva Star Farm rotates the electric fencing for the pigs as often as needed and more often as the pigs get older and larger. Here at Silva Star Farm we do what we can to accomodate all animals, porcine or poultry, they all feel comfortable, satisfied and at home.

2011 Harvest

We have recently purchase Tamworth hog breeding stock a rare breed pig which we plan to have more piglets arrive in about 3 weeks, (end of September). We currently have 2 Tamworth market hogs raised 100% here at the farm, scheduled to be harvested September 22. One hog is already reserved ... or deposits are coming in. This is an excellent heritage breed pig well suited for pasture and one of farm Sarah Silva's favorite to raise. Please email me if you'd like to reserve your fall pork. Our Pig Price Page has more about pricing. People are already reserving these guys and they've just been born!

Silva Star Farm's Stellar J Pork's Role In the Sustainablility Aspect of the Farm

Here at Silva Star Farm everyone has a role, we all play a part as stewards of the land. Our pigs help do many things here at the farm, during the late summer months the pigs help eat all of the apples droppings from our crop of approximately 60 apple trees. In addition to sweetening themselves with apples the pigs help turn in the chicken manure, as we have them running behind the chicken tractors (portable floorless chicken housing). Our pigs also help to eat all the "extra" edible food waste produced by the farm, this includes vegitables, fruts, organic kitchen scraps, and chicken meal. As with all animals, the pigs also leave behind a very useful manurer that adds vitality and nutrients to our farm's soils.

Origin of the "J" in Silva Star Farm's Stellar J Pork

We have a rule that we do not name food... But while raising pigs we've found that they needed nicknames just in case we needed to single them out for health or personallity reasons. These are very large animals and we've found there's never a dull moment raising pigs. Our first meat pig at Silva Star Farm was deemed John Doe I, and because of his name all of our pigs have since had names with the initials J.D. Some examples are Jonn Doe II, Jane Doe, Jack Doe, and Jill Doe. Ok so we're a little silly here, but we do have fun and we don't see any better way to enjoy farming.
